Infected Total Hip Replacement

Infected Total Hip Replacement

Infection in a total hip replacement is a devastating complication. It occurs in 1:200-300 hip replacements and can occur early (within the first 12 weeks), delayed (within a year) or late (any time from a year onwards – even at 20 years down the line). It almost always requires surgical treatment to resolve and often requires complete removal of the infected hip replacement. Treatment for this is rarely done in the private hospital setting due to the complexity of the problem and its management. If this is something that you are concerned about, I would be happy to see you for an initial consultation and investigations but the majority of your care would be performed in our specialist Prosthetic Hip Joint Infection Clinic at Southmead Hospital. This clinic is run by me and 4 other specialist surgeons together with a number of microbiologists who all work together to achieve the best outcomes for this challenging problem. Referral to this clinic is normally via other hip surgeons or GPs.
